Petra - The Rose City

Petra is the ancient capital of the Nabatean civilization dating back to around 300 BCE. Carved from solid pink sandstone, Petra (which is Greek for "Rock") is sometimes called "The Rose City". Under the Nabateans, Petra prospered as a center of the spice trade that spanned from Egypt to China.

Al Khazneh, or the Treasury

The Treasury is a temple carved into solid pink sandstone

The Monastery, or Ed Deir

While the Treasury is the most famous of sights in Petra (maybe because it is the first one you see), the Monastery is my favorite. And hard earned, because it is furthest from the entrance of Petra.

First carved in 3 BCE, the Monastery served as a Nabatean tomb.
